What’s the Difference Between Silver Fillings and White Fillings?

white fillings San Antonio

Silver fillings have been used in dentistry for more than a century to repair cavities in teeth. But they can be unsightly, and at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS in San Antonio, we offer fillings that can match the color of your teeth.

One of the reasons that silver fillings have a long history in dentistry is that they are so effective. Once they are in place they harden quickly and can last for many years.

But they can really be unsightly, especially when they’re in a highly visible part of the mouth. That’s what makes white fillings increasingly popular.

White fillings are not made from the same material as silver fillings. Where silver fillings are made from a combination of metals, white fillings consist of plastic and ceramic.

Many  people prefer white fillings for health reasons, too. The fact is that silver fillings contain mercury, which is a known toxin. Health authorities say the levels are so low, and the mercury so stable, they do not pose a risk  to humans. As evidence to support that, they correctly say that multiple studies back that up, and that metal fillings have been used for more than one hundred years.

But we would rather be safe than sorry, and want you to have a great smile, too, so we offer white fillings. Of course, you’re better off with no fillings at all, and we urge all our patients to brush and floss daily and see us for regular checkups.

At William J. Stewart Jr. DDS in San Antonio we offer complete general and family dentistry. Patients come to our practice from Shavano Park, Leon Springs, and Beorne for checkups, cosmetic dentistry, and other services.  Please call our office to schedule an appointment today!
