Dental Crowns at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS in San Antonio Dental crowns have been used in dentistry for over 2000 years. There is evidence that the Etruscans experimented with crowns on teeth using ivory and bone as early as 700 B.C. By 200 A.D., they began using gold crowns to construct artificial teeth. Ancient Egyptians fashioned tooth replacements out of seashells and then hammered them into their gums. (Oral sedation, anyone?)

Porcelain crowns were first used in the 1800s. With the refining of metal casting methods in the 1900s, crown dentistry advanced significantly.

Today, crowns are strong, comfortable and are made to match your surrounding teeth.

Dental crowns (also called caps) cover the entire visible portion of the tooth and are cemented in place. Crowns are used to strengthen teeth that have been worn down or weakened by decay or injury. Crowns are also used to restore the original shape of a tooth or solely to improve the appearance of a tooth.

The most common types of crowns are:

  • All-porcelain (ceramic)
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • Gold

The material used is determined by several factors. If you suspect you need a crown, want to replace an old crown, or want to learn about other cosmetic dentistry procedures, call Dr. William Stewart at 210-428-6535. William J. Stewart Jr. DDS is located at 13220 Huebner Rd in San Antonio. We have been serving patients in the San Antonio area since 1981. We can recommend the best tooth restoration or cosmetic dentistry option for you.

Bad Breath Treatment at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS Do you suspect that you have bad breath? I’m William Stewart of William J. Stewart Jr. DDS, a full-service dental office in San Antonio, Texas. I help our dental patients diagnose and overcome this unpleasant and potentially embarrassing condition.

Halitosis is caused by the bacteria that live on and around your teeth, gums and tongue. Breath mints and mouthwashes do not cure bad breath, they only mask the symptoms. Proper oral hygiene can cure many cases of bad breath. However, in some cases, bad breath is caused by more serious conditions. Sinus and tonsil infections, acid reflux, ulcers, diabetes, hypoglycemia, kidney malfunction, and eating disorders are just some of the health issues that can cause bad breath.

If you have bad breath, the first thing to do is make sure you are cleaning your teeth, gums and tongue thoroughly. This does not mean you should brush as long and forcefully as possible. Brushing too vigorously can harm gums and contribute to gum recession. At William J. Stewart Jr. DDS, we help patients of all ages learn safe and effective brushing, flossing and tongue cleaning methods.

And don’t forget regular professional cleanings. Our friendly dental hygienist is trained in the latest and most effective deep-cleaning procedures. Your teeth feel so good after being cleaned professionally!

To make an appointment for an exam, cleaning or consultation, call 210-428-6535. Your teeth are too important to neglect.

Sedation Dentistry Beorne

Does your heart start pounding at the mere thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you drive by any Beorne cosmetic dental practice?

Many San Antonio residents who have improved their smile with cosmetic dentistry chose to use sedation. Though the terms “sleep dentistry” and “oral conscious sedation” are often used interchangeably, they are not identical. There are three main types of sedation used in dentistry.

Nitrous Oxide
The first level uses nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” as it is sometimes called. Nitrous oxide has been used in San Antonio cosmetic dental offices for generations because it is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the procedure, but wears off quickly after the mask is pulled off. If you need a little help to get through dental treatment, but don’t want to be knocked out cold, nitrous may be your best option.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedatives don’t start working as quickly as nitrous oxide, but they help most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. These medications, however, do not usually produce complete unconsciousness. Thus, oral sedatives and nitrous oxide are used in “conscious” sedation. Two common sedatives used by Beorne dentists are diazepam and triazolam.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery and results in true “sleep dentistry.” Most patients are completely oblivious to what is going on in their mouth. IV sedation is often used for procedures such as root canals, wisdom teeth extractions and multi-procedure smile makeovers.

To learn more about sedation dentistry, adult braces, tooth implants, or porcelain veneers, call William J. Stewart Jr. DDS at 210-428-6535.

cost of dental crowns San Antonio

A healthy smile is priceless and superior dental care is a worthwhile investment in your quality of life. But the cost for treatment and precision restorations can sometimes be prohibitive. Knowing what to expect price-wise can make your dental visit more palatable.

Obviously, the cost of some procedures such as crowns versus fillings are dependent upon unknown factors. X-rays can show the basic problem but sometimes the extent of the damage isn’t clear until we get in there. Our caring staff works to offer estimates based on best-case and worst-case scenarios.

Nailing down the cost is much easier once the overall treatment plan is established. Dr. William Stewart performs an oral exam, reviews the patient’s dental history, and consults with the patient before creating an estimate. The price is influenced by the patient’s current condition, cosmetic goals, and long-term functionality.

Usually, the cost of treatments such as teeth whitening, dental implants, veneers, denture fittings, and the price of cosmetic dentistry can be explained at the initial consultation with Dr. Stewart. We encourage our patients to take some time to review the options before they settle upon  which elective procedures to pursue. We never pressure our patients to make a quick decision about something as important as dental treatment.

Here at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS, we are committed to customized patient-focused care. Often the treatment plan will be extended over several visits to allow healing and adjustment in the mouth before doing more work.

With restorations, the most conservative treatment is always preferred. The cost is weighed with priority for adequate eating and speaking functionality. Personal confidence in appearance is also taken into account and given priority.

Dr. Stewart has been practicing patient-centered and detail oriented dentistry since 1981. If you are in the market for teeth whitening or dental crowns but are worried about how much it will set you back or whether your insurance company covers the procedure, then call 210-428-6535 today and let us look into it for you.

Feel free to shop around and compare our reasonably-priced prices to other dentists in the area – but be wary of bargain-basement dental advertisements. Many ads present a false picture of the actual cost of the treatment. And, do you really want to trust your smile to the lowest bidder?

Thank you for visiting our blog.

Here is the William J. Stewart Jr. DDS guide to treating teeth grinding.

Understand
Most teeth grinding will occur while sleeping. Consistent teeth grinding might be suspected with a sore jaw and dull headache in the mornings. Anxiety or stress are not the only reasons grinding may appear. It can also be related to an abnormal bite or missing or crooked teeth.

Visit Dentist
Bruxism is a medical term used for grinding teeth. Bruxism can be identified by Dr. William Stewart through an oral examination of jaw tenderness and abnormalities in the teeth. Discuss a possible nightguard for teeth grinding.

Get Control
When tooth grinding occurs, the fear is resulting oral damage and pain. Here at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS we support oral health in many ways. Here are three things that may help:

  1. Control caffeine or alcohol intake as these may increase tooth grinding.
  2. Avoid gum and prohibit pen or pencil chewing. This benefits the jaw as it keeps the jaw from clenching repeatedly.
  3. Allow the jaw to relax; sometimes just setting your tongue between your teeth will help your jaw relax.

Every individual in our community from San Antonio to San Antonio deserves a good night’s sleep as well as a pain-free, headache-free morning.

It’s no problem to come down to our office at 13220 Huebner Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78230 and consult with Dr. Stewart about this or any other dental concern. Call 210-428-6535 today to schedule an appointment.

We are committed to healthy, happy patients. A beautiful, confident smile allows full, honest interaction with others. Don’t live with pain. cost of dental crowns San Antonio

Dental crowns have been around a long time, but they continue to play an important role in San Antonio cosmetic dentistry. A dental crown, often called a cap, covers the visible part of the tooth.

Dental crowns are used for several problems common among San Antonio cosmetic dentistry patients:

An old crown that is damaged or ill-fitting
A broken tooth
A tooth with extreme decay
A tooth that has had a root canal
A tooth that is too small or misshapen
A tooth that prevents a proper bite

A dental crown serves both structural and aesthetic purposes. It protects a natural tooth from additional decay and damage while permitting normal function. In addition, a dental crown often prevents the need for an extraction and the bone loss that can occur with a missing tooth.

San Antonio cosmetic dentistry patients who get a dental crown should not assume that the tooth is now invincible. Crowns need daily cleaning and flossing just like natural teeth. The remaining tooth structure just around the gumline could still become decayed and the soft tissue around the crown is susceptible to gum disease. Chewing hard foods or using your teeth as a tool can cause a crown to crack or break. (Use scissors to open a stubborn plastic package – don’t bite and pull!)

Your San Antonio cosmetic dentist can advise you on caring for your new crown so that it will last as long as possible. Some of our Leon Springs patients have crowns that are still looking beautiful after ten years.

For information on San Antonio dental crown prices, invisible braces, conscious sedation, or teeth whitening, call William J. Stewart Jr. DDS today at 210-428-6535 or visit http://www.stewartcosmeticdentistry.com/.

San Antonio Dental Health Is Affected By Soda - Cosmetic Dentist

Soft drinks, soda, pop. No matter what you call it, it seems that these days it’s the dietary villain of choice. Today in the William J. Stewart Jr. DDS Dental Blog, we are going to give you yet another reason to avoid this ubiquitous drink.

For dental health, soda deals a double punch of damage with two of its ingredients: sugar and phosphoric acid.

Sugar is bad for your teeth primarily because it softens enamel and makes the teeth more prone to decay. This is especially harmful to San Antonio, Shavano Park, and Beorne children and teens because their enamel is not fully developed.

Some people think that they can avoid problems by choosing diet soda for their refreshment, but, unfortunately, the acids found in diet soda have basically the same detrimental softening effect on enamel.

Soda consumption can also lead to discoloration of teeth and the need for cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening.

Our recommendation is simple: stop drinking soda or dramatically reduce your soda consumption to improve your dental health. Also, keep your kids away from soda as much as possible so their teeth have the chance to mature healthily.

Can’t kick the habit? Try to drink water right after you have soda and brush more often (but wait a half hour after you consume your soda so the enamel isn’t brushed while it is soft).

My name is Dr. William Stewart. I provide advanced general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry to the San Antonio area. I want my patients to have the best oral health possible. I also want them to have the dazzling smiles they desire, so if you have any questions about cosmetic dentistry, give us a call at 210-493-3040.

Beorne cosmetic dental and tooth implants

Today’s William J. Stewart Jr. DDS blog post focuses on three dental-related myths prevalent in the San Antonio area.

All Sugar Is Equally Bad For Teeth
We all know that sugar increases our risk of tooth decay, but some types are worse than others. Sugar-based foods that sit on the teeth are more dangerous than those that are swallowed immediately. For example, sipping a soda or sucking on a mint can be worse than eating a candy bar all at once.

You Don’t Need To Worry About Baby Teeth Because They Will Fall Out Anyway
Healthy primary teeth serve several important purposes. They allow the child to eat and speak properly. They retain proper spacing of teeth. A healthy smile instills confidence and self-esteem. Healthy baby teeth eliminate the pain of decay, which disrupts normal daily activity.

Pulling A Tooth Is Just As Good As A Root Canal
We will let the American Associate of Endodontists explain this one:
Saving your natural teeth, if possible, is the very best option. Nothing can completely replace your natural tooth. An artificial tooth can sometimes cause you to avoid certain foods. Keeping your own teeth is important so that you can continue to enjoy the wide variety of foods necessary to maintain the proper nutrient balance in your diet. Endodontic treatment, along with appropriate restoration, is a cost-effective way to treat teeth with damaged pulp and is usually less expensive than extraction and placement of a bridge or an implant. Endodontic treatment also has a very high success rate. Many root canal-treated teeth last a lifetime.1

At William J. Stewart Jr. DDS, we provide accurate answers to all of your dental questions.

If you are interested in sedation dentistry, teeth whitening, or clear braces, call us today to schedule an appointment.

San Antonio lowest price teeth bleaching

What does it take to really change the way you look? Hours upon hours at the gym? Expensive trips to the most cutting-edge salon in the San Antonio area? What about a routine trip to your dentist?

You may not love going to the dentist, but you will love the results when they help you find the best way to whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening in San Antonio is a simple cosmetic dentistry procedure, but the dramatic results never cease to impress.

Your Shavano Park, Leon Springs, or Beorne dentist can work with you to develop a teeth whitening regimen that will be most effective. This may include any of the following three methods:

1. Bleaching done in-office. Sometimes called chairside bleaching, a special light is used while a bleaching agent is applied to the teeth. A rubber shield or protective gel is used to keep your tender gums safe from the whitening agent.

2. Bleaching at home. Even though this is done at home, the peroxide-containing whiteners used do have potential side effects, so it’s a good idea to discuss this with your dentist. Also, there are many at-home whiteners available in San Antonio, Texas drug stores, and your dentist can direct you to the best ones.

3. Toothpastes with whitening properties. When a toothpaste carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance, it means that it contains special chemical or polishing agents. These will provide additional stain removal which complements the surface stain removal offered by all toothpastes.

My name is Dr. William Stewart of William J. Stewart Jr. DDS in San Antonio. Helping my dental patients establish good habits is important to me, as is helping them achieve the smile they want using cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, teeth whitening, bonding, and complete smile makeovers.

My practice, William J. Stewart Jr. DDS, is currently accepting new patients, so give us a call at 210-428-6535 to make an appointment!

We hope to hear from you soon!
