Dead Or Just Sick?

do I need a root canal San Antonio

Since our teeth don’t ‘grow’ and the enamel is not comprised of living cells, sometimes we forget that teeth are alive. We are reminded that they have active nerves when we have a toothache or sudden sensitivity to hot or cold food. Like other organs, teeth need a blood supply to stay alive and healthy.

Veins, arteries, lymph vessels and nerves live below the enamel and dentin in the pulp of the tooth. When the blood flow is cut off, the tooth eventually dies. What can cause blood flow troubles? Injury, trauma, infection, large fillings, and multiple restorations can impact a tooth’s blood supply.

Your dentist can perform root canal therapy to save a dead tooth if necessary. During a root canal procedure (or endodontic treatment) the soft tissue in the root of the tooth is removed. Once the roots are cleaned out and widened, they are filled with a special rubber material. The root canal is only the first step in the complete tooth restoration. The final steps are the core build up and beautiful and functional crown.

Root canals typically last many years, but not always. Inadequate oral hygiene, decay, periodontal disease, an undetected crack, abscess, or degradation of root canal sealing materials can all cause a root canal to fail.

How do you know if you have a dead or dying tooth? It is critical to communicate with Dr. William Stewart of William J. Stewart Jr. DDS immediately if you experience tenderness or pain, hot or cold sensitivity, tooth discoloration, tooth injury, gum swelling, gum pain, or lymph node tenderness or drainage. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes there are no noticeable symptoms. That is why it is essential to visit your dentist regularly for a thorough dental examination and dental cleaning.

In addition to endodontic therapy, at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS we are committed to patient-centered and detail oriented general and cosmetic dentistry. You can count on William J. Stewart Jr. DDS for: root canals, clear braces, sedation dentistry, and teeth whitening.

San Antonio Guide To Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

Hi. I’m Dr. William Stewart. Welcome to my San Antonio dental blog! I find that many of my patients in the Shavano Park, Leon Springs, and Beorne areas get a couple of dental terms mixed up. Today, I would like to clarify the differences between plaque, calculus, and cavities.

Plaque is a film that covers teeth – a sticky layer of bacteria. You can remove plaque through daily brushing and flossing. However, if it isn’t removed it can build up and harden into calculus.

Calculus, also known as tartar, is hardened plaque that also accumulates minerals from food and saliva. Regular check-ups and cleanings with your San Antonio dentist are necessary to remove tartar as well as hard-to-reach plaque.

Plaque and calculus are not cavities, but they can lead to cavities. A cavity is basically a hole in the tooth caused by decay. Because plaque and calculus contain bacteria, the bacteria release acids which accelerate tooth decay and eventually lead to more cavities.

A good rule of thumb for dental patients is this: Avoid plaque to avoid calculus and tartar to avoid tooth decay to avoid cavities. Got it?

I hope you’ve found this helpful, and if you’re in the Shavano Park, Leon Springs, or Beorne area and are in need of quality dental care, call our office at 210-428-6535 to schedule an appointment today.

Our patient-centered and detail oriented staff would love to answer any questions you have about our services, including cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, and veneers.

You Won’t Be Out Cold (Unless You Want To Be!)

Sedation Dentistry Beorne

Does your heart start pounding at the mere thought of having a cavity filled? Do you get sweaty palms when you drive by any Beorne cosmetic dental practice?

Many San Antonio residents who have improved their smile with cosmetic dentistry chose to use sedation. Though the terms “sleep dentistry” and “oral conscious sedation” are often used interchangeably, they are not identical. There are three main types of sedation used in dentistry.

Nitrous Oxide
The first level uses nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas” as it is sometimes called. Nitrous oxide has been used in San Antonio cosmetic dental offices for generations because it is safe and effective. It goes to work at the first inhalation, relaxes the patient during the procedure, but wears off quickly after the mask is pulled off. If you need a little help to get through dental treatment, but don’t want to be knocked out cold, nitrous may be your best option.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedatives don’t start working as quickly as nitrous oxide, but they help most patients achieve a deeper level of tranquility. These medications, however, do not usually produce complete unconsciousness. Thus, oral sedatives and nitrous oxide are used in “conscious” sedation. Two common sedatives used by Beorne dentists are diazepam and triazolam.

IV Sedation
IV sedation uses medications similar to those used in surgery and results in true “sleep dentistry.” Most patients are completely oblivious to what is going on in their mouth. IV sedation is often used for procedures such as root canals, wisdom teeth extractions and multi-procedure smile makeovers.

Does My Shavano Park Dentist Treat Bad Breath?

Your San Antonio Dentist Treats Bad Breath When my Shavano Park dental clients ask me if mouthwash cures bad breath, I tell them that treating bad breath with a mouthwash is like drenching yourself with cologne instead of taking a shower. Mouthwash is only a temporary mask for odor caused by poor dental hygiene, tongue bacteria, or digestive problems.

The best-selling mouthwashes in Shavano Park have a significant amount of alcohol, which can even exacerbate bad breath by drying out the mouth. Some bacteria grows even faster in a dry environment.

To eliminate bad breath, you need to find the cause. To get rid of hidden bacteria multiplying between teeth, pay more attention to thorough flossing and brushing.

A haphazard thirty-second brushing won’t prevent halitosis (or cavities). Try to brush for at least three minutes. It may seem like overkill if you have been a speed-brusher but remember that there is a lot of area to cover on multiple planes.

Devise a system to brush every reachable surface of every tooth. Then floss carefully around every tooth, pulling the floss down into the space at the gumline on both sides. Brush your gums, sides of mouth, palate, and tongue, also.

Schedule a deep dental cleaning at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS with the best hygienist in the Shavano Park area and request a refresher (no pun intended) course on brushing and flossing.

If your tongue is the culprit, you might want to start using a tongue scraper. Tongue scraping has become quite popular in Shavano Park, especially among the college crowd.

A tongue scraper is a cleaning tool that works like a squeegee to scrape bacteria and food particles off the surface of the tongue.

I am Dr. William Stewart of William J. Stewart Jr. DDS. At William J. Stewart Jr. DDS, we treat many Shavano Park dental patients with bad breath. There is no reason to feel embarrassed. (Leaving bad breath untreated can be more embarrassing.)

Same Day Smile Makeovers with Porcelain Veneers in San Antonio Have you ever wished your San Antonio cosmetic dentist could glue new pearly white covers on your existing teeth as easy as you paint a wall in your house? Guess what? With porcelain veneers, it’s possible. Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin tooth-shaped fronts that are permanently bonded to your natural teeth.

Unlike a crown procedure, your San Antonio dentist does not need to remove tooth structure to place the restoration. If the teeth in question have decay, come see us immediately.

Call 210-493-3040 to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

At William J. Stewart Jr. DDS in San Antonio, veneers are used alone and in combination with other cosmetic dental procedures to create complete smile makeovers. Because they can correct cosmetic tooth misalignment in one visit, veneers are sometimes referred to as ‘instant orthodontics’.

Do veneers look like natural teeth?
Skilled San Antonio cosmetic dental lab artists create porcelain veneers with the color, reflective properties, and translucency of natural teeth: perfect natural teeth, that is. In addition, porcelain veneers can be made in any size or shape.

Are veneers at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS
strong?
Porcelain veneers are fabricated out of extremely durable material. If you have questions about whether a veneer or dental crown is the best choice for you, talk to William Stewart. Dr. Stewart will consider the size and condition of the tooth and its position in the mouth.

How long do veneers last?
Some William J. Stewart Jr. DDS smile makeover clients have veneers they received over 15 years ago. (And they still look terrific!) If properly cared for, veneers can last as long as dental crowns.

Are porcelain veneers affordable in San Antonio
?
The cost of cosmetic dental veneers at William J. Stewart Jr. DDS is competitive with other premium cosmetic dental practices in the San Antonio area. We use what we believe is the top Texas dental lab to create our client’s veneers and a significant portion of the cost of veneers goes to the lab. Porcelain veneers are often less expensive in San Antonio than crowns and orthodontia. For questions about the cost of porcelain veneers, call our office at 210-493-3040

Multi-Procedure Dental Visits in San Antonio If you are planning extensive cosmetic dental work, you may be wondering whether to do it all at once or one procedure at a time over an extended period. Here are some factors to consider:

Cost
In the long run, It is less expensive to do it all at once. At William J. Stewart Jr. DDS in San Antonio, we are able to complete several procedures in one visit. We know that complete smile transformations are a significant investment for most San Antonio residents. We would be happy to discuss affordable dentistry financing options. Call us at 210-493-3040 to schedule a no-pressure consultation.

Time
With the latest materials and cosmetic dental techniques, healing times are shorter than ever before. However, some procedures such as bone grafting, soft tissue grafting, root canals, and dental implants often require a short healing period.

It is easier physically and psychologically to have the fewest possible visits to your San Antonio dentist. You should also consider how your dental visits and necessary healing periods will impact your employment and family life. You will have less down time if you receive several procedures at once.

Aesthetic Results
While we routinely achieve great outcomes when doing a smile makeover in steps, porcelain restorations are best fabricated in the same “batch” for the most precise color matching.

Sedation Dentistry
When you come in for a smile analysis, we can discuss oral sedation dentistry. Many Shavano Park and Leon Springs cosmetic dental patients benefit from this safe and effective solution for pain and anxiety management. Conscious sedation is especially helpful for procedures such as multiple wisdom teeth extractions and dental implant placement.
